One-day conference on Haydn Quartet in C Major, opus 20#2

From 10 AM to 5 PM
Greenwich House Music School
46 Barrow Street (between 7th Avenue and Bedford Street)
New York, NY

The Manhattan String Quartet is excited to be offering a workshop on Haydn’s innovative Quartet in C Major, opus 20#2 Sunday, December 4, 2022. This second of his six “Sun” Quartets heralds a new day in quartet composition with markedly increased equality among the four voices. The cello states the opening theme–how radical!–and the infectious last movement fugue offers interest in all four parts. We will spend the entire day exploring this masterpiece.

Proof of vaccination will be required, and wearing of masks will be strongly encouraged when not eating or drinking. Lunch will take place in the roomier upstairs recital hall.

Please also mark Sunday, March 19, 2023 on your calendars. We’ll be back at Greenwich House that day for another intense and illuminating session. Repertoire to be announced.

The Workshop will include:

    • One-on-one coaching in quartet format
    • Talk by Dr. David Clampitt musicologist at Ohio State University on historical and theoretical
      aspects of the work
    • Catered lunch
    • Performance of the work by the MSQ
