One-day conference on the Arriaga Quartet #1 in D Minor
From 10 AM to 5 PM
Greenwich House Music School
46 Barrow Street (between 7th Avenue and Bedford Street)
New York, NY
Dear Friends,
We are excited to be focusing our March 19th Greenwich House workshop on composer Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga (1806-1826). Often referred to as the “Spanish Mozart”, this Bilbao native studied with Cherubini at the Paris Conservatory. Living a mere 19 years, Arriaga managed to complete an opera, a symphony, and three very distinguished string quartets. We will study the first quartet in D Minor, and here is a link to the Guarneri Quartet’s beautiful recording. The work shows a true melodic gift and a sophisticated understanding of counterpoint and harmony. Great tunes abound in all four parts! Please join us as we delve into this wonderful quartet.
Proof of vaccination will be required, and wearing of masks will be strongly encouraged when not eating or drinking. Lunch will take place in the roomier upstairs recital hall.
The Workshop will include:
- One-on-one coaching in quartet format
- Talk by Dr. David Clampitt musicologist at Ohio State University on historical and theoretical
aspects of the work - Catered lunch
- Performance of the work by the MSQ
